    More Gander Invitational Details

The registration for the Gander Invitational on Sunday has picked up in the last 24 hours. It’s exciting to see such a big contingent from St. John’s and the good representation from lots of other communities. If at all possible, don’t wait till the last minute to register. We don’t want to run out of chilli and it helps to know the numbers to get everything ready.

The temperatures have begun to drop so we plan to have most trails groomed for Saturday morning. We still haven’t seen the damage done by the warm temps and high winds but so far we have avoided the rain. We hope out of towners get here early enough to have a good ski tomorrow. The lights will be on Saturday night.

Here are a few more race details
    • All races will be mass start.
    • Waxing tables will be set up in the garage on Sunday morning.
    • A midget category has been added to the 5 km race. Anyone already registered who needs to make a change can do so at the registration table on Sunday morning.
    • Skiers can either skate or ski classic in the 200, 500, 1 km and 2km races.
    • Both the 200m and 500m courses are on the stadium section of the Red Trail.
    • Maps of the races have been posted at < http://airportnordic.ca/wordpress/race-info/ >. We had hoped to create a different course this year but with our two day mild we have reverted to the old GI course. Dave Tanton just calculated the actual distances: 5.1k, 9.5k and 14k.
    • There is one change, however, from the old course; the skiers start near the hut. The first lap(5.1k) uses the whole Blue, Green & Red and is longer than the 2nd and 3rd laps which are used for the 9.5k and 14k. The laps for the longer races do not use the stadium section of the Red and the lower Blue. Check the maps for details and the more exact distance for each race.
    • Hot Chocolate, chili and rolls will be served after the races. And Heather Tanton has promised some cookies. If you need other refreshments, bring them along.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Successful Nordic Ski Cross Tournament at Blow Me Down

Mark Tierney spear-headed a Nordic Cross event last night for Track Attack, upper level Jackrabbits and his adult ski training group. There was a mini “quarter-pipe” turn, a downhill Ski Cross run with bumps, jumps, turns and hoops and a down-hill slalom course that the three groups rotated through. The Ski Cross run was the only one timed. It took place on parts of the A and B trails very near and through the stadium and under the lights. Lively music was blaring throughout. The mood was very upbeat and excited! It was excellent. Other clubs should try this.
