Team Selection
• Based upon at least one but preferable two the following events:
  1. Labrador Open
  2. Early Season Selection Races
  3. High School Championships
  4. Kids Ski Fest and Midget Championships
  5. Any other race on the Canada Points List (sanctioned)
  6. Outfitters Open
  7. Any other race approved by the Ski Team Committee.
The guideline for selection is 80 per cent of the top skier in the category. Three per cent or more improvement per category is expected. Percentages will be adjusted if that improvement is not maintained. For example, if the top Juvenile Girl was as fast as the top Junior Girl, the juvenile would be 100 per cent and the top Junior Girl would be 97 per cent. Characteristics of racing fields (size, depth, performance spread) will assist in the assessment of candidates selected. Skate and classic results will be evaluated.

Notes:

For out-of-province races:

X skier % = 100 - (time difference to winner x 100)
                                         Winner’s time
For in-province races:

X skier % = Winner’s time
                   Skier’s time

Team sizes and selection are regulated by dollars available for program support, cost savings possible (seat sales, etc.) and performance spread between athletes. Guidelines for percentage required for selection depends on available funding and team priorities. A skier may make the guideline percentage, yetnot be selected. Those with the highest points within an age category would take precedence. Coaches’ and Ski Team Committee discretion will be used in all cases.

Labrador City early Snow Camp Nov 28-Dec 4, 2010

XCNL Provincial Ski team converged on mid winter conditions the last week of November at Menihek Nordic in Labrador City. Blue sky and plenty of snow to start the week of on snow training. This event is an annual event during this period. The camp has a history of being excellent ski training and competing over an 8 day period for the team. This year was no different. We were joined by Cross Country Canada High Performance Coordinator Lisa Patterson once again along with a number of Provincial coaches to assist in the programming of the camp of 20 skiers from around the province.

Our major focus for the team members was on technical and distance training for these athletes. This being their first exposure to snow this season, it was important to make the transition properly. During the later portion of the week we were able to host the Labrador Open, a skate and classic two day event interval start. The Weather, contrary to past years actually regressed for the skiers with unseasonably warm temperatures and rain which made waxing interesting for the final day of the training camp and the two race days. Thankfully there was enough snow initially to suffice and the diligent work of the Race Committee and grooming, namely Alf Parsons, on their efforts to preserve a course for us to race on.

We were fortune enough to have a visit from Gold Medal Olympian Beckie Scott via video Conference to conduct a question and answer discussion. We had an opportunity to bring together some insightful thoughts from her and tap into her wealth of knowledge.

This Snow camp brought together both able bodied and Para Nordic with the addition of Pamela Budden, sit skier from Gander Newfoundland. It was her first visit to Labrador in preparation for the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, 2011 where Para Nordic will be making it’s depute. We wish her luck in her pursuit.

We would like to thank or sponsors for making this camp possible.
